Colors

Storyboard

Every design must include the selection of colors. They characterize a style and, as in this case, define the desired appearance of the result. Particularly, the color "dark red or brick-type" with white outlines creates that "Swedish country house look".

To achieve the right colors, it's important to understand that there is both the concept of "color" as well as wavelength or frequency, and also the "brightness" it conveys. In this sense, color should be interpreted as a perception that goes beyond what a measurement can provide and ultimately includes the perception that humans literally "feel".

An example is the color magenta, which we perceive as humans, but which does not exist physically as such. Therefore, it's necessary to determine the desired color, for example in photos, and find the color that feels most similar among the available paint colors. This does not exclude the effects of the applied surface that cannot be fully controlled.

Load Gimp

There are various programs for creating, editing, and analyzing images. One of these is Gimp, which can be downloaded from https://www.gimp.org/ and is free to use.

Once installed, you should load the image to be analyzed (under File > Open) and then choose the "Color Picker Tools" function:

Get the Hex Color Code

Image

>Top

With the image loaded, proceed to click on the color selector, which will open the color panel.

Then, select the mode to determine the color, known as "Color Picker Tools".

Once selected, search the image for an area with the color to be determined and click on the pixel that should be within the cursor's crosshairs.

The result will be displayed in the color panel or "Change Foreground Color" box under the "HTML Notation" section. Here, the code composed of six letters and numbers will be shown. This is the hex code that identifies the color you are looking for.

Red example

For the characteristic red color of the Swedish countryside house, two cases are studied. The first one, and for our taste, the closest to what we see as the typical Swedish countryside house, is a dark red color similar to what is called "wine barrel". The measurement yields a Hex code equal to 7d282f. The second example, which is more of a color that could be called brick color, would have the code ae3d2f.

Additionally, the color analysis is shown, where at the top the RGB (red-green-blue) decomposition is indicated, which indicates the content of red, green, and blue. The number should be seen in relation to its maximum, which is always 255; i.e., the 125 of red would be equivalent to a fraction of 0.49.

In the last line, the CIE-Lab code is shown, which is associated with how the color is perceived. The first number is associated with luminosity, which is 29.6 in the first case and 42.1 in the second case, indicating that the second one is brighter.

Get paints by manufacturer

Image

>Top

Under "Get paint list," you can use the hexadecimal code of a paint to retrieve the closest matching paints from various manufacturers. To do this, enter the hex code, click the execute button, and the system will list, under each brand, the most similar paint, indicating its code, name, and providing a sample, along with the degree of similarity (100 being identical, 0 being completely different):

Note: The program currently only has catalogs from Chilean manufacturers loaded. If you want to use the tool for manufacturers from another country, you would need to provide the list of manufacturers and the different catalogs with codes, names, and images in PNG format with color samples arranged regularly. This would allow loading the different catalogs and running the program for that country.
