Die Sonnenstrahlung, die die Atmosphäre der Erde erreicht, weist ein Spektrum auf, das auf die sichtbare Wellenlänge ausgerichtet ist. Wenn das Licht in die Atmosphäre eindringt, interagiert es mit Wassermolekülen und anderen Gasen, wodurch ein Teil seiner Intensität verloren geht. Dieses Phänomen kann effektiv mit einem Abschwächungsfaktor modelliert werden, der mit der Intensität multipliziert wird und von dieser Interaktion abhängt.

Die Menge des Lichts, die die Oberfläche der Erde erreicht, hängt von der Wolkenbedeckung ($\gamma_v$, dargestellt durch ein graues LEGO-Stück) ab. Diese Bewölkung ist mit der Breitengrad ($\theta_s$, dargestellt durch ein rosa LEGO-Stück), Längengrad ($\varphi_s$, dargestellt durch ein hellrosa LEGO-Stück) und der Zeit ($t$, dargestellt durch ein weißes LEGO-Stück) verknüpft. Vom Weltraum aus können diese Bereiche als weiße Zonen beobachtet werden, die den Wolken entsprechen:

In diesem Bild wird eine Bewölkungskarte der NASA angezeigt, aber es gibt auch andere Quellen für Bewölkungsdaten. Die für solche Darstellungen verwendeten Daten haben in der Regel eine Auflösung von 5 x 5 Kilometern für verschiedene Regionen und werden stündlich aktualisiert.
